Guidelines for using Central Library resources and services effectively

About the Central Library

The IIT Delhi Library System comprises of a Central Library and 33 departmental libraries collectively supporting the teaching, research and extension programmes of the Institute.

The Central Library houses over 300,000 documents comprising books, theses, journals, videos, etc. in engineering, science & technology, humanities, social sciences, and management. All operations are fully computerized using Koha library management software with RFID-based automated system.

The Library remains open throughout the year except for six holidays: Diwali, Dussehra, Holi, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, and Republic Day

Alumni Entry

As per the decision of the Advisory Committee for the Library (ACL), Alumni should make an entry in the Entry Register before using the Library. They are allowed during 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM only. Alumni are not permitted during any examinations of IIT Delhi students.

Library Membership

All students, faculty and employees of the institute are entitled for the membership of the Library. Library membership form is available at the Membership Counter at Central Library. Retired employees and Alumni of the Institute can also avail Library membership.

Loss of Identity Card / Library Card

Report the loss immediately to the Institute Security Office and Circulation Counter of the Library. The concerned section (UG/PG) will issue a duplicate RFID Identity card. Contact Reader Services Division for Tagging of RFID Smart card. Borrowers shall be responsible for any loss or misuse of their original/duplicate card.

Issue Conventions

  • General books are issued to all eligible members as per their entitlements.
  • Reference books and bound volumes are issued with special permission. Contact Incharge, Reader Services Division/Librarian.
  • Theses, dissertations, and CDs are not lent out of the Library.
  • Readers should check books thoroughly for missing pages/chapters while getting them issued.
  • No book in damaged condition will be accepted on return. Damaged books must be replaced with new books.

Textbook Section

Textbooks can be consulted within Library premises on depositing Identity Card. 2 textbooks can be issued for 2 days.

Book Bank

6 books can be issued for the whole semester to B.Tech students only from the Book Bank section.

Hindi Books

1 extra Hindi Book can be borrowed by all members apart from their regular entitlement.

Book Reservation

Books can be reserved through Library OPAC or by contacting the Circulation Counter. Only books that are currently issued (not on shelf) can be reserved. You may also email: rsd@library.iitd.ac.in

E-Resources Usage Guidelines

Important Notice

Systematic downloading will cause the publisher to block access for the entire IIT Delhi community. Breaches of license agreements could result in suspension of access for all member institutions.

Permitted

  • Viewing, downloading, copying, printing and saving search results
  • Downloading and printing individual articles
  • Using for scholarly, educational, research, teaching, private study
  • Sending article copy to another authorized user
  • Posting publisher's URL on class website

Not Permitted

  • Robots or intelligent agents for systematic bulk downloading
  • Downloading entire journal issues or volumes
  • Using for commercial gain (reselling, redistributing)
  • Transmitting content to unauthorized users
  • Posting publisher's PDF on open websites

General Rules

Please read and follow these rules for a pleasant library experience for everyone. Click on each category to expand and view the rules.

Membership & Identity Card4 rules
  1. All students, faculty, and employees of the Institute are entitled to the membership of the Library.
  2. Users must carry their Library Membership card while using the library. They must show their ID card on demand.
  3. RFID Library membership card is non-transferable.
  4. The loss of Identity Card or RFID Smart patron card should be reported to the Institute Security and Circulation Counter. Borrowers shall be responsible for any loss or misuse of their original/duplicate card.
Conduct & Discipline8 rules
  1. The library user shall not engage in audible conversation in any part of the Library; observe strict silence so that others are not disturbed.
  2. Users should not talk or discuss as they may disturb others. Reading areas are meant for individual study and research only.
  3. Users are expected to maintain proper decorum at all times. Sleeping, sitting inappropriately, placing legs on chairs is not permitted.
  4. Users should not rest or keep their feet on tables, chairs, shelves, etc.
  5. Smoking, pan chewing and spitting in the library is prohibited.
  6. Membership privileges can be suspended for misbehaviour with Library staff or indecent manners.
  7. Maintaining discipline in the broadest sense is the motto of the library.
  8. By entering the Library premises, users agree they may appear in library-related photographs, videos, or promotional content.
Mobile Phones & Photography2 rules
  1. Use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited inside the Library. Making or receiving calls is not allowed. Keep phones on silent or vibration mode.
  2. Taking photographs or recording videos is strictly prohibited without prior written permission from the Library Administration.
Food & Personal Belongings5 rules
  1. Users are not allowed to carry eatables/drinks inside the Library.
  2. Personal bags should be kept at Property Counter at own risk. No valuables (laptop, mobile, money, ATM cards) should be kept inside bags.
  3. The library shall not be responsible for any loss or damage to personal belongings.
  4. The Security Guard at the Library gate will check all personal belongings including Library books.
  5. Users must take care of their pen drives, CD/DVD ROMs, mobiles, wallets, etc. The library is not responsible for any losses.
Books & Library Materials6 rules
  1. Books removed from shelves, if not required, should be kept on the nearest book trolley/table. Do not try to shelve them yourself. A book misplaced is a book lost.
  2. Users shall not write upon, damage or mark any book belonging to the Library.
  3. Marking, scratching, damaging, mutilating, stealing library materials will invite disciplinary action.
  4. User is responsible for any damage caused to books or library property and shall pay the penalty imposed.
  5. Check books before borrowing to ensure they are not damaged. If damaged or pages missing, get it recorded. Otherwise, you'll be held responsible.
  6. The Library reserves the right to call back any issued book at any time.
Computers & IT Resources6 rules
  1. Computers should be used for academic purposes only.
  2. Online chatting, dating, browsing social networking sites is strictly prohibited. Strict disciplinary action will be taken.
  3. Playing games/watching movies on computers is strictly prohibited.
  4. Users are not allowed to share Proxy ID and Password with other students.
  5. Changing settings and display of library computers is not permitted.
  6. Users should not remove/unplug computer cables, network cables, and other peripherals/accessories.
Seating & Space Usage4 rules
  1. Do not leave reading materials and personal belongings unattended on tables. Items left beyond 24 hours may be removed by staff.
  2. Users should not leave bags/books on tables to claim or reserve seats. Capturing/reserving seats is strictly prohibited.
  3. Other users may remove bags and books left unattended on tables.
  4. Seats are used on a first-come, first-served basis.
Left Out / Stored Items2 rules
  1. Items left in any Library area including Property Counter and not taken before 3:00 AM closing will be removed and may be deposited with main security unit.
  2. Collect your belongings before closing time each day. The Library will not be re-opened for left-out items. Staff and Library are not responsible for any losses or inconvenience.

These rules are subject to revision/change from time to time without assigning any reason. The Librarian is free to take any decision in the interest of the library or institution.
