The Reader Services Division (RSD) is a key functional unit of the library, dedicated to providing comprehensive support to faculty members, students, and visiting users. It serves as the primary point of contact for access to library resources and user-centric services, ensuring a seamless and efficient academic experience. RSD manages essential services such as library membership registration, issuance and return of books, and No Dues clearance, Faculty profiling system (IRINS), IITD Research Publication, Data Support Services (DSS). It also facilitates Inter-Library Loan (ILL) services, enabling users to access resources beyond the library’s own collection. The division is responsible for the effective shelf management and maintenance of diverse collections, including Engineering, Reference, Hindi, and Conference Proceedings. RSD supports outside users through a library visit facility, promoting wider academic engagement.
Library Membership
All students, faculty and employees of the Institute are entitled for the membership of the Library. Library membership form is available at the Membership Counter at Central Library. The Library membership can also be availed by the retired employees and Alumni of the Institute. The Library currently has about 13000 members. Alumni Entry
The IIT Delhi Alumni with valid Alumni ID are allowed in the Central Library from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, except during Majors/Minors, etc. as per the ACL decision. However, they are not allowed to use the Library Computer Lab/E-resources facilities to facilitate our current students and staff/faculty.
Corporate Membership
The industrial and corporate houses can become Corporate Members of the Library by making an annual payment of Rs. 15,000/- and a one-time refundable security of Rs. 15,000/-. Borrowing Rules
- Readers should check books thoroughly for missing pages or chapters while getting them issued.
- No book in damaged condition will be accepted on return.
- Damaged books must be replaced by the borrower.
General Book Section
- Faculty, students, and staff members having RFID cards can self check-in and check-out books using the RFID kiosk and book drop box during library hours.
- Members without RFID cards can borrow books from the Circulation Counter from 9:00 AM to 5:15 PM on weekdays.
Text Book Section
Two textbooks can be issued on loan for three days from 9:00 AM to 5:15 PM.
Conventions for Issue / Return
- General books are issued to eligible members as per their entitlements.
- Reference books and bound volumes are issued only with special permission. Contact Incharge, Reader Services Division.
- Theses, dissertations, and CDs are not lent out.
- Issued books can be renewed a maximum of two times if not reserved by other users. Overdue books cannot be renewed.
- Students must return books on time. No books will be issued if overdue books exist.
Cost Recovery of Lost Books
The following is the approved criteria for recovering the cost of lost books:
- The lost book should be replaced by a new book with overdue charges, if any, and with processing charges of Rs. 100/- for each book.
- In case the book is out of print or not available in the market, then double of the cost mentioned in the Accession register should be charged with processing charges of Rs. 100/- for each book with overdue charges, if any.
- Minimum of Rs. 300/- to be charged with processing charges of Rs. 100/- for each book with overdue charges, if any.
- The cost of the book in foreign currency is to be charged at the current conversion rate of the currency.
Overdue Fine
- Rs. 1.00 per day for books from the General Section
- Rs. 6.00 per day for books from the Text Book Section
- Rs. 1.00 per day for books from the Book Bank Section
No dues clearance from the Library
The No Dues clearance process at the Central Library is designed to be simple, efficient, and fully online for the convenience of students. Once the No Dues request is initiated by the Academics Section, it is forwarded to the library for verification and approval. If there are no pending items or outstanding dues in the students library account, the request is promptly approved by the authority concerned.
For PhD students after defense, a hard copy and soft copy of the thesis must be submitted to the Theses Section. In cases of resignation or termination, relevant documents must be submitted at the Circulation Counter or via email. Students are advised to regularly check their library accounts to ensure a smooth and timely No Dues approval process.

Loss of Identity Card / Library Card
Loss of Identity Card or bar-coded patron card must be reported to the Institute Security and the Reader Services Division of the Library. Duplicate cards will be issued by the concerned section. Borrowers are responsible for misuse of their cards.
