Textbooks for Student Success

About Text Book & Book Bank

The Section containing Text Books, Book Bank and Ph. D. Theses is located at Ground Floor of the Central Library. Book Bank section is the back bone of the Central Library as it caters to the course needs of the B.Tech. students and therefore the documents from this section are in high demand throughout the year. A portion inside the section is available for serious reading which is perhaps the most comfortable reading area in the whole library.

Text Book

Important Information for Text Books

General Opening Hours of the Section
  • 9:00 AM to 8:45 PM for reading during Monday to Friday
  • 10:00 AM to 6:15 PM for reading during Saturdays, Sundays and holidays
Extended Hours
  • Round the clock during major and minor exams
Book Issue & Return Hours
  • 9:00 AM to 8:45 PM during Monday to Friday
  • Text books are issued for three days only
  • A maximum of two text books can be issued at a time
  • A book can be renewed only twice
  • Late fine of Rs. 6 per day will be charged
  • Books marked “Not to be issued” are for reading only
  • Books may be taken outside the section only for reading and photocopying. Students must submit their ID card with the book card.
  • Any fine must be paid online and the receipt must be produced in the section for settlement.

Your ID is mandatory for all checkouts. No exceptions can be made.

Book Bank

Important Information for Book Bank

  • The Book Bank is for use by undergraduate students only.
  • The Book Bank facility is mainly designed for Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe students and is also available for OBC, MCM, EWS, and General students on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Students can avail books from the Book Bank collection as per the schedule announced by the library.
  • Students must bring their ID cards to use the Book Bank facility.
  • Up to six books can be issued per semester (six months) to undergraduate students.
  • Books from the Book Bank can be returned on or before the due date, but another book cannot be issued in place of the returned one.
  • Late fine is charged at the rate of Rs. 1 per day.

Things to Note

  • The section is equipped with an RFID station, and students must bring their smart cards for self-issue of books from this section.
  • Writing or highlighting in books is not allowed.
  • In case of loss, the cost of the book in foreign currency will be charged at the current conversion rate.
  • A lost book must be replaced with a new copy of the same title and latest edition, along with overdue charges and a processing fee of Rs. 100 per book.

Phd Theses

Ph.D. Theses

The Theses Section is housed in the same area where the Text Book and Book Section is located on the ground floor. The Central Library receives copies of all Ph.D. theses awarded at IIT Delhi, and these are housed in this section.

There are about 8,500 Ph.D. theses currently available. The theses on the stacks are arranged according to the year of submission. Users need to note the details from the WebOPAC to locate the theses. Copies of Ph.D. theses are also available in the respective departments.

The database of Ph.D. theses is accessible through the WebOPAC by title, author, supervisor, department, year, and other parameters. It is also accessible through a dedicated interface for searching theses at: http://ir.iitd.ac.in/home

IR@IITD (Institutional Repository) provides online access to thesis abstracts (from title to content pages) from anywhere in the world.

Full text of the theses is available through Shodhganga at INFLIBNET Centre.

Additionally, this section is responsible for Ph.D. thesis submission and approval of no-dues on the institute ERP. The prerequisites for submitting a thesis are provided in the Guidelines for Ph.D. thesis submission and no-dues.

Humanities and Social Sciences

The HUSS section has a strong collection in Humanities and Social Sciences, catering not only to the requirements of the faculty and students of the Department , but also to a varied group of people interested in general readings. It is located at Ground Floor of the Central Library. The books from the section may be issued for 14 days to students, 1 month to staff, and 1 Semester to faculty and other academic staff members of the institute. The overdue fine is ₹1 per day.

Bindery Services

The Central Library used to empanel approved binders to handle most of its binding needs. This includes repairing damaged pages and providing full rexine binding with gold printing.
