Collection Development Division

About

The Collection Development Division (CDD) is responsible for identify, acquisition, processing, organizing & providing access to high quality scholarly resources that meet the scientific and technical education and research needs of the IIT Delhi fraternity. The CDD involves evaluating the strengths and weakness of the current collections, assessing the needs of the institute communities and continues effort to finding the most effective interdisciplinary collections to the schools, centres, and departments of institute. The division is also responsible for maintaining the fiscal records of allocation of library funds for the departments/centres/ schools. The selection of collection and processing are done according to the collection development policy of the Central Library, and it is fully automatized using Koha open sources software a state-of-the-art integrated library management system. 
The CDD is charged with the responsible of developing the following different collections of the Central Library and Departmental Libraries of the institute. 
•    General Collection (GS)
•    Reference Collection (RL)
•    Textbooks (TB)
•    Book Bank Collection (BB)
•    Hindi Collection
•    Conference Proceedings (CD)
•    Theses (TH)
The CDD performs a central role in the delivery of basic library services as collection development and are constantly in the process of increasing the collection of books on Science, Engineering, Technology, Management and Humanities & Social Sciences discipline. 
The IIT Delhi Library System comprises of a Central Library and about 36 department/ school/ centre libraries collectively supporting the teaching, research, and extension programmes of the Institute. The CDD procure the Books, process, and send to the Departmental Library, if these are recommended for the Departmental Library.

Collection development is a collaborative effort of the library and institute communities especially faculty members. Therefore, all faculty members are considered an integral part of the collection development team. The empanelled vendors of Central Library, IIT Delhi are regularly visits to departments/schools/centres, showing the latest published books; and to seek recommendation of books. Hence, faculty members are encouraged to refer online catalogues, publisher catalogues, publisher sites, book reviews, announcements to get updates on latest published books and contact the vendors to recommend the books are research and teaching interests.

Faculty
Faculty members can recommend the books by filling Faculty Book Recommendation Form with details about book including title, author, publisher, ISBN, publisher price etc. and name of empanelled vendor who have agreed to supply the book. The book(s) requisitioned by the faculty members for purchase should be routed through the respective HoD/HoCs always with approval. Then, CDD immediately check the duplication, if the library already owns a copy of the recommended book, faculty will be informed with details of the same. If doesn’t find, then it will be processed further for the procurement as per policy. The faculty will be informed once after book has been received, processed and is available for checkout.
Student
The active students including research scholars, undergraduate, and graduate students of IIT Delhi can also recommend the books by Student Book Recommendation Form with details about book including title, author, publisher, ISBN, publisher price etc. and empanelled vendor Name of Vendor (if possible). The book(s) requisitioned by the students must be approved by the concerned faculty (usually supervisor) and forwarded through ACL representative of concerned Department/Centre/School with approval. Then, CDD will take the further procurement process as per collection development policy.
 
Technical Staff
Technical staff members can recommend the books by filling the Book Recommendation Form (Technical Staff) with details about the book, including title, author, publisher, ISBN, publisher price etc. and Name of empanelled vendor (if possible)(List available at Link: https://library.iitd.ac.in/approved-vendors). The book(s) requisition form should be routed through the concerned faculty incharge and respective HoD/HoC/HoS always with approval. Then, CDD, Central Library will take the further procurement process as per the collection development policy. The budget allocated to the Deptt/Centres for the procurement of books shall be used for this purpose.
Admin Staff
Admin staff members can recommend the books by filling the Book Recommendation Form (Admin Staff) with details about the book including title, author, publisher, ISBN, publisher price etc. and Name of empanelled vendor (if possible)(List available at Link: https://library.iitd.ac.in/approved-vendors). The book(s) requisition form should be approved by reporting officer (Group-A). Then, CDD, Central Library will take the further procurement process as per the collection development policy. The Central Library budget shall be used for this purpose.
 

The Central Library, IIT Delhi, in collaboration with the IIT Delhi Empanelled Book Vendors is regularly organizing the Physical & Virtual Book Exhibitions to provide an open platform to institute fraternity to visit, choice, review, recommend and procure the books displayed by the vendors.  During the exhibition, the empanelled vendors setting up stalls with their latest editions of published books including textbooks and references from the leading publishers like Springer, Elsevier, CRC Press, Cambridge University Press, Chicago Press, Harvard University Press, Macmillan International, MIT Press, Wiley, World Scientific, Bloomsbury etc. to attract visitors. The faculty members and students of IIT Delhi can review each book and recommend to strengthening the physical book collection of Central Library and well as Departmental Libraries. The main aim of book exhibitions is not only getting recommendations, but it can also play an important role in developing the reading habit among professionals and bringing the institute community together. 

Objectives

  • To provide an open platform to institute faculty members/students and staff members to know recent editions of published books on their subject area/discipline.
  • To facilitate to review and recommend the books for the Central Library and Departmental Library to strengthen the collection.
  • To facilitate faculty members to procure the books using their PDA/PDF.
  • To facilitate the institute community to buy the books from the personal funds on IIT Delhi approved discounted rates.
  • To develop the reading habits among institute fraternity.
